Ep. 47 – AI, Kids, and Learning: Navigating the New Frontier with Andrew Dugan

In this final episode of our four-part series on technology and learning, we’re tackling a topic that feels like the “Wild West”: artificial intelligence + kids.

Is this a threat, a tool, or something else entirely?

Join us for a grounded and thoughtful conversation with Andrew Dugan, a former teacher and software engineer. Andrew is the developer behind Aris.chat, a customizable AI tool designed specifically for kids.

In this episode, we’re not just talking about whether AI is “good” or “bad.” We’re breaking down what generative AI and large language models (LLMs) actually are, exploring how they can be used as a “library” for learning, and discussing the need for critical thinking when it comes to new technologies.

Andrew gives us a unique perspective, sharing his insights as a:

  • Parent: What excites him about AI’s potential for his own child, and what concerns are already on his radar?
  • Software Engineer: What innovations in AI offer the most hope for learning—especially for neurodivergent kids—and where do the red flags lie?
  • Former Teacher: How can AI support self-directed learning and language development, and what does he wish educational tools would do differently?
  • Consumer: What’s working in the world of AI, and what gives him pause?

We also discuss how to design tech that supports regulation rather than overstimulation and what makes a tool like Aris.chat different from other AI platforms. Andrew offers actionable advice for using AI with your kids instead of just for them, and how to spot the signs of a supportive tool versus a concerning one.

 Key Takeaways

  • AI as a Tool, Not a Replacement: Andrew emphasizes that AI can provide unprecedented access to knowledge and custom learning experiences. However, he cautions against over-reliance, which could lead to a lack of genuine human connection and a potential “AI-induced neglect” if parents stop engaging with their kids about their learning.
  • The Power of Human Connection: As technology moves faster than ever, it’s essential to lean on human connection to make sense of it all. Talking with fellow parents about these topics is not just helpful—it’s essential. We can learn from each other’s experiences, concerns, and successes.
  • Aris.chat’s Approach: Aris.chat is designed with safety, customization, and autonomy in mind. It’s built to be a tool for self-directed learning, giving parents the freedom to choose what content and websites their kids can access, all while avoiding ads and inappropriate content.

During his 10-year teaching career, he taught all ages from Pre-K to university both in China and in the U.S. For the last 7 years, he has worked as a software engineer focused on AI primarily in education. He and his brother built one of the top VR language learning apps in the world, and now that he’s a dad, he is focused on creating safe AI tools for kids.
